Making Maverick’s Flight Suit from “Top Gun” (1986)
like the rest of the world my wife and i,were completely blown away by top gun,maverick it very well could be the,greatest film to come out this year and,we loved it with that being said,deciding what we wanted to be for,halloween this year was very easy we,decided to go as top gun and not any of,the pilots from the top gun maverick,sequel but from the original top gun i,decided to go as maverick and my wife as,charlie in this video i'm going to be,making the flight suit from the original,film that maverick wears and charlie's,jacket i hope you enjoy watching i,really enjoyed making it so i thought,we'd take a look at the patches first so,this is the pete mitchell maverick patch,it has velcro on the back,all of these patches were kind of,difficult to find this is the united,states navy patch that goes on the left,chest,this goes on,charlie's left arm,and her left chest these wings,the united states navy patch that goes,on the right pocket of the flight suit,ranger centurion goes on the arm as well,as the tomcat patch which is the type of,aircraft the f-14 top cap at maverick,flies,this is maverick's patch that goes on,his right chest,here is the top gun patch this one was,very difficult to find without a black,border the flight suit that will be the,base of the flight suit that we're,making today is a rothko intermediate,flight suit this is not the exact flight,suit that they wear in either of the,films however i really like it,and it was cheap and compared to the,other flight suits i actually found this,one on poshmark for,50 off brand new with tags so that's,very exciting,however it is not the exact flight suit,that they wear in either of the films,like i said those i believe run around,200. and for a halloween costume which,is what this is i just didn't feel,comfortable spending that much and,i don't fly planes so,so i didn't need the more expensive one,uh also this is a leather jacket that i,found on poshmark as well for around,thirty dollars this is going to be the,base for the charlie jacket for my wife,this year for halloween uh this is not,anywhere close to the exact jacket that,charlie wears in the film however i,think this one is pretty darn close it,has the buckles on the wrists like hers,does and it has a buckle around the,waist which i really like,the main difference between this one and,the jacket that she wears is this pocket,on the,left chest,her jacket does not have a pocket here,however i really like this pocket i,think it adds like a little bit more of,a tactical look to the jacket,i really really like it,while we're here i'll show you the pin,that's on the collar this is a u.s navy,cap device took a little google,searching to figure out what this pin,was,so i saved you a couple minutes of,google searching right there,but yes the,this is the flight suit again all the,pockets are in the right places the main,difference between this one and the,screen used flight suits are the zippers,they have little pull tabs on the,zippers that's the main difference that,i can see,the color might be slightly different as,well,but to just about anybody no one's gonna,notice that and i really like it fits me,great this is a size medium i'm about,six foot even 165 pounds so,i really like it this is it all the way,around,thank you,so finding the right placement of all,the patches is incredibly important you,can start by ironing on the patches if,they have an iron backing,make sure to lay down a cloth in between,the iron in the patch so you don't burn,the patch however that did not work for,me,so instead i used double-sided tape and,aligned the patches where i wanted them,on the flight suit this is the top gun,patch that goes on the left chest for an,example and then i used pins to secure,them in place this is what that looks,like,now it's time to sew so this is me,setting up the bobbin,and getting the machine threaded now i,am not a sewer this is my first time,ever using this specific sewing machine,and i have not used a sewing machine in,years so,if i'm doing some stuff wrong,please go easy on me,this is me sewing on the maverick patch,i think it turned out pretty good,so it essentially was the same process,over and over for every single patch,that goes on that was the top gun patch,here comes the tomcat patch,on the opposite shoulder,i made sure to use reference images when,aligning the patches,here comes the ranger centurion,and again securing it with needles,or pins,here's a look at the charlie jacket all,of the things that i did for the flight,suit apply to the charlie jacket,now getting the correct color of thread,was incredibly important i actually took,all of the patches into walmart and,hobby lobby to the thread section and to,match the colors in person,now for the two patches that go on the,two front pockets of the flight suit,those needed to be hand stitched you,could sew them on with the sewing,machine but you would,lose the function of the pockets which,is something i didn't want to do so,again secure those in place and began,sewing,i'm very thankful for the creation of a,sewing machine because hand sewing,takes so much longer,than a sewing machine,and after i finished sewing on the,second patch i tied off my thread,cut the excess,here's what that looked like,and i took the flight suit and threw it,in the dryer just to tie everything,together,and here is a look at the finished,flight suit this is the flight suit from,the final battle scene of the 1986 film,i'm very happy with it,let's try it on,okay here's the finished flight suit,thank you so much for watching this,video today i know that,this is not a screen accurate replica,however it is very very close this is,not the exact flight suit like i,mentioned earlier these patches are not,the exact patches all of them are almost,if not perfect replicas though i spent a,lot of time tracking down all of these,patches like i said earlier in the video,and i'm very very happy with how this,turned out if i had the actual screen,used flight suit next to me i would have,been able to line up all of these to the,exact millimeters that they are on the,actual flight suit however i just had to,use reference images so some of these,patches might not be in the exact,position,that they are in in the film but i think,i did a pretty good job i'm very happy,with how this turned out and i'm there are a few films from the 1980s,more classic than top gun and the main,character maverick really knows how to,rock a leather jacket like a badass so,what's the secret to stealing his rakish,style for yourself guys it's time for,another movie challenge thomas with real,men real style here and in today's video,i'm going to show you how to rock the,style of top gun first up let's start,with the clothing the cornerstone of,maverick style is definitely that,leather jacket it's a classic g1 flight,jacket which was first issued in,it's never stated outright in the movie,but the jacket likely belonged to his,father as the g1 was no longer standard,for pilots in 1986 some key features of,the classic bomber are the elastic,waistband and cuffs the two patch,pockets on the waist and the furline,collar his jacket is also covered with a,variety of patches commemorating,different naval ships military units and,tours of duty under that iconic leather,jacket he wears a simple white cotton,t-shirt he sticks with a classic crew,neck with a chest pocket now this is the,1980s so you're not going to see any,dark wash denim here instead he rocks a,pair of jeans with a light to medium,wash in a straight fit now just as,iconic as the leather jacket are the,sunglasses maverick wears originally,made for pilots back in world war ii,aviator sunglasses have been very,popular with both military and civilians,ever since maverick wears a pair in the,classic teardrop design with a gold,frame next up is the watch he wears a,porsche design aviator style chronograph,now that's a ten thousand dollar watch,damn so that's a bit steep for the,budget of this video so i'm going to go,with a cheaper option instead now the,main details i'm looking for are the,black metal bracelet black case and,watch face and three chronograph dials,it wears a casual black leather belt and,a pair of western boots the boots are,pretty flashy with a mix of red yellow,and green leather which matches well,with the character's rebellious nature i,couldn't find boots in that color combo,so i'm going to stick with a more,classic brown leather which he appears,to be wearing in the 2022 top gun film,now let's cover the grooming the navy,requires pilots to be clean-shaven,though a short mustache is allowed but,beards are definitely out so i'm going,to need to shave mine off i'll remove,the bulk with the trimmer to make it,easier to shave now during the 1980s the,most popular way to shave was with a,multi-blade cartridge razor and an,aerosol shaving cream today i wouldn't,recommend shaving cream in a can as the,ingredients aren't the best for your,skin it's best to use a shaving cream or,gel that has natural ingredients but hey,for the purpose of this video i'll,suffer through it now the reasons for,being clean-shaven aren't just for looks,they're practical too because you need a,good seal on your oxygen mask when,flying and facial hair can interfere,with that alright gents whether you're,using an electric safety or cartridge,razor consider using an aftershave ball,applying this after you shave helps to,cool the skin and prevent redness now,gents the grooming products you see in,today's video brought to you by vitamin,and instead of me telling you how,awesome they are how about i put a link,down in the description of today's video,so you can try them for free seriously,gents use that link in the description,to grab a sample kit over at vitaman for,free,when it comes to the haircut the navy,has specific rules for that too the,sides must be short and tapered into the,top of the haircut and the hair on top,cannot exceed 4 inches looking at,maverick's hair it appears he uses some,gel to style it but still leaves it a,little bit tossled ready to see it all,put together,so,now maverick's cool but if you ever want,to look like john wick guys check out,this video here where i'm going to break,down and show you how to steal the style,of john wick,you

Top Gun Final Dog Fight - Homemade Behind the Scenes
welcome to the behind-the-scenes for our,homemade Top Gun scene this is how we,made it,all right so to tackle this classic 80s,movie starring Tom Cruise if you haven't,seen it you should go check it out,we divided the scene into two main,sections we've got our live-action stuff,which is like the cockpit interiors and,then we've got miniatures which is all,the jets flying in this guy so the first,step was to make the costumes and mainly,it's the helmets we got some bicycle,helmets we added on sides I just made,out of some cardboard just to give it,that overall shape and then it's a lot,of spray paint strips of tape some,markers or pieces of paper cut out into,certain shapes there's three main,helmets plus a bad guy so the first one,is maverick and then we've got Merlin,and then there's only one shot of Iceman,but still had to make the helmet so he's,got a really cool helmet actually but,it's only in one shot and then we've got,the bad guys helmet it's the same helmet,from one of the bad guys in our Star,Wars scene all of the pilots have that,oxygen mask thing that kind of attaches,to their face too so that's a plastic,funnel and then we just used like a,vacuum cleaner tube and keep that to the,end of it and then just made some straps,out of tape to strap it on our heads,like rain when they wear a mask and then,put the helmet over it what you got,there she's mixed up just hang on do it,steering the one again so we set all the,cockpits up in my dining room we put up,a blue sheet for the sky and then set,some dining room chairs up and that we,can sit in instead of trying to make a,whole cockpit that's got like a circular,shape with glass we just said forget,about that let's just get the overall,shapes so to get that circular shape we,attached a piece of hose made a loop and,then depending on which cockpit it is,that we're shooting in there's some,other little details like so you just,sit in that and then the camera just,kind of moves around and we just trying,to match which way it tilts and whatever,and all we see behind it is the blue sky,so Ben is the one sitting in the cockpit,for Merlin ice man and the bad guy and,then I play maverick which is Tom,Cruise's character it's the main,character and then Ben and I play the,other two dudes that appear in just one,shot each we've got a hat that the one,guy wears was from our alien scene if,you look close grad Jeremy there's a,couple insert shots shifting inside the,car or a couple plus ups of the little,joysticks we found an old joystick from,a thrift store and just did the,close-ups on that they had the same kind,of shape,first shot what take one alright so far,all the miniatures we set up the same,blue sheet for the sky background a,couple of the shots have a kind of a,cloud layer so on the dining room table,we laid down the white sheet then it's,just a matter of matching up all the,individual shots with the little,miniature planes that we have we hang,them up on some strings a couple shots,there on the end of a stick so those,shots are pretty straightforward but,there's one really tricky shot that we,had a hard time figuring out how to,shoot it the jet does a barrel roll then,it straightens out and there's bullets,flying and it's like a weird angle I'm,laying on the floor,you've got the sheet set up so I'm,shooting upwards bends over above the,sheet and he's gonna be dropping the,confetti that's the bullets down on to,me and I've got the iPad upside down,right here so I can see what the shot is,and the whole shot itself is upside down,and then in editing we just flip it back,the right way so it was a real,Mindbender,trying to figure out how to frame this,but we finally figured it out there's a,couple shots where you see the missile,firing off of the jet so we took a,little nerf dart and painted it gray and,stuck it on the end of a white pipe,cleaner and painted a little extra red,and orange and yellow on there so it,looks like fire and then the smoke trail,there are two big explosions in the,scene too so we took the sky outside and,used match and sprayed some wd-40 so,we've shot individual shots of the plane,and then replaced it with our explosion,we did light the sky on fire in one take,but everything's fine don't try this at,home kids,there is one shot of a close-up of a,machine gun firing so we actually had,built this already for our kick-ass,scene it was on the jetpack so we had,that little kind of Gatling gun looking,thing so we just got a close-up of that,and made some cardboard flames and just,sort of intercut between flames of,different sizes and it has like an,animated cool-looking effect there are,two shots of the graphic display where,you see graphics on top of the jet there,trying to pinpoint where it's at we use,transparencies and just drew out the,graphics on there so we put the blue sky,sheet on the table put the jet on there,and then kind of just move the,transparency around and give it that,look so it looks like it's,trying to target the jet yeah there we,go,bullseye so that's how we made our,homemade Top Gun scene,is being melted off when we do the,energy games so we had to build a new,one,this is growing up parents got me a guitar,said you could do anything kid you could,go far you could be the president,fireman race cars,the sky's the limit kid so shoot for the,stars so i strum that guitar every day,found the password for music never went,away i joined a couple bands and played,a few shows,tried to impress the girl in the front,bro but soon enough everything starts to,change,as you grow up nobody treats you the,same they try to take your future and,make you real safe,you could be a doctor accountant or,something saying but yo,whatever happened to the sky was the,limit i fell in love with music never,thought it was a gimmick,i worked so hard on every tune and every,single lyric my whole identity depended,on being artistic now you wanna strip,that away,so you feel okay cause if i make it to,the top or does that really say that you,shouldn't have given up that you made,the mistake but if i fail you feel much,better about picking your lane,right things are gonna get better,real soon,yeah i'ma just do me you just do you,i swear it's gonna get better real soon,don't let anyone tell you what you,should do,i got a clear view,cause what you got to lose,except for me,and let's be honest life's a competition,so if i'm going to play then i'm going,to play to win it,i refuse to sit and rot at a desk all,day unless i have a passion i'm working,towards okay i'd rather dead on the,outside than inside i pull it to the,head than 25 to life in a cubicle alone,just trying to get by building someone,else's dream instead,of building mine if you're hearing me,this is meant to inspire,if you have a dream or if you have,desires a girl in your life,is making you feel that fire go fight,for her man go die for her man cause you,only have one life one chance to do it,one chance to prove it to yourself so,don't lose it you got this man just keep,pushing onto it one day you'll look back,so glad you pursued it,yeah things are gonna get better,don't let anyone tell you what you,should do,i got a clear view we're gonna make it,soon,i won't give up,up,and all i hear is haters try so hard to,talk me down but they can't stop the,sound,already on the ground everything is,growing faster than i can,go now because i got this now i got the,formula and i'm about to drop,it loud so what we're talking about,there is,is,is

Halloween comes once a year and,everybody wants to go all out without,breaking the bank,80s nostalgia is everywhere right now,with people embracing their crimped,haired scrunchie we're in puff paint,adorned days I mean who are these people,why are they still stuck in the past I,worked with savers again to make some,totally tubular 80s costumes by,combining their thrifted pieces with,their new Halloween accessories and my,DIY creations so let's hop in our,DeLorean and go back to the totally,bodacious era to make a Teen Wolf,costume I found a yellow t-shirt and I,cut off the neckline and sleeves to make,it look like a basketball jersey sketch,out the team name and the number 42 in,pencil then go over the letters and the,perimeter of the number in blue marker,fill in the numbers of blue paint and,allow to dry layer together a brown tee,with a faux fur jacket we put this one,on backwards if you don't go with a,werewolf suit DIY it with brown sweat,pants yellow jerseys shorts and your,tank add werewolf hands a prosthetic,nose and ears at Brown face paint a,yellow sweat band and fangs and now you,are an animal to make dreamboat Lloyd,Dobler from say anything all you need,our jeans high-top sneakers a clash,t-shirt or there abouts and the clincher,is a long trench coat top it off with a,blasting boombox and your melting hearts,everywhere I found a sweet boombox in,the home decor section but if you can't,whip one up with cardboard and paint,for my favorite we create the Goonies,Mikey wears a gray sweatshirt or t-shirt,under a jean jacket make mouth with an,80s black and purple tee preferably,purple rain' a gray jacket comb and,spike up your hair for chunk pull,together plaid pants or shorts with a,black Hawaiian shirt at a blonde wig if,need be and eat some whipped cream for,data layer a white button-up tee gray,sweater and military jacket add DIY,dynamite an old camera $50 bills a,bright backpack and red cap Gracie is,wearing a black beret,to be momma Fratelli to top it off at a,one-eyed Willy,the first scooty I have the actual map,you can print out in a link in the,description below for Marty McFly layer,a red tee a white linear button-up jean,jacket and a red vest rock those,high-tops and go back to the future be,maverick with a white tee leather bomber,jacket aviators and dog tags easily DIY,has patches by printing them out on,cardstock covering in clear tape and,pinning to the jacket duct tape to avoid,holes now you're living in the danger,zone my mind is blown by these radical,costumes I just might have to be all of,them for Halloween to see how to be once,from some kind of wonderful check out my,vegan leather fringe web video be sure,to subscribe to Meg Allen Cole crafts,and go to Sabres comm for more Halloween,tips and ideas thank you so much for,watching and remember Goonies never say,die

rio and maverick graduated from ,top gun and was recalled back to the uss
enterprise he was played by tim robbins ,charlotte charlie blackwood is
a civilian contractor at top gun ,and the love interest of maverick she became
a civilian contractor and an instructor at ,the marine corps air station miramar every
few weeks she would meet 10-20 new pilots ,charlotte blackwood is based on a real live person
christine fox she was played by kelly mcgillis ,here boss johnson is the air traffic controller
top gun he hates maverick for buzzing the tower ,which causes him to spill his coffee on his
uniform then he goes to jester and wiper and ,complains about the fly by that both never even
goose did of his tower at the time in the film ,he was 48 years old now 82 he was sported by

good morning aviators from actors,passing out on camera to underwater,escape training and stunts so dangerous,they're even banned in the navy here's,how the best aviation film of all time,came to be,welcome to explained,tom cruise is no stranger to high,altitude stunts he's flown in an f-14,fighter jet been ejected out of it and,has hung upside down on the wing of a,world war ii aircraft so not,surprisingly when they decided to make a,sequel to this blockbuster 1986 film he,insisted that top gun maverick had to be,as real as possible you just can't,create this kind of experience unless,you shoot it live in order for us to,accomplish this we have the greatest,fighter pilots in the world working with,us we're going to show you what it's,really like to be a top gun pilot,we worked with the navy and the top gun,school to formulate how to shoot it,practically because if we're going to do,it we're going to fly in the f-18s,but flying in the cockpit of an fa-18 is,no walk in the park,these aircraft are capable of touching,top speeds of mach 1.8 to put that into,perspective that's like traveling,222 kilometers an hour and another fun,fact tom cruise's footage from the f-14,cockpit in the first movie was the only,one that was usable that's because all,his co-stars either passed out or had,their eyes rolling in the back of their,heads so considering this the cast this,time around had to be trained even more,intensely than the first movie in fact,tom personally overlooked the design of,an all-encompassing training program,the training that those guys all put in,the four and a half to five months of,training that they put in is necessary,you just can't pop up and uh,and show up and go mach3 they had to,know what was coming up or else number,one it wouldn't look good and number two,they could put themselves into danger to,begin with all the actors had to become,accustomed to the fundamentals and,mechanics of flights and g-forces,but how many g's did you pull because,you've done you've been on a plane,before you pulled six g's so how how,many did you have to do on set in,training we were getting up over eight,g's,i think close close to nine when we were,in the f-18,we were pulling up to seven and a half,which was tough but the toughest part,really would be like how how sustained,they were so when you were sustaining,four g's but you were sustaining it for,like a minute and a half yeah you know,sometimes two minutes almost the whole,time that was tricky but what is g force,simply put it's a measure of,acceleration 1g is what we normally feel,from the force of gravity and it's what,keeps us planted on the ground the,typical human body can withstand about,five g's which is commonly experienced,on your average roller coaster but,military pilots who perform maneuvers in,high performance aircraft train to,experience 9gs or more,pilots also have to wear anti-g suits,and train in a device called the,centrifuge that recreates the force you,feel in an aircraft and unless they,undergo intense g-force training and,learn to manage blood flow they can,experience g-lock or g-force induced,loss of consciousness not something you,want happening while flying a killer jet,in fact alex flew in a red bull air race,aircraft a couple of years ago and it,was absolutely insane,in addition to geforce training the,actors learned drills for worst case,scenarios one of them was ejecting over,water,so the navy put them through a,challenging underwater program and this,training was also far more intense than,the one that casted for the original,did you have to survive something in,water what was that you had to,training just in case you needed to,eject from the fighter jet yeah so we,had to pass the naval aviator over water,survival training course um it's kind of,a bunch of different things it's a,written test and then you you get in the,pool and you do a bunch of different,exercises,they took the,cockpit and,shot it into the water and then you have,to escape out of that,so they do stuff like hold you under,water for a while and and then,see if you can float and you know fun,stuff but the worst thing is you do this,exercise it's called the dunker and they,strap you to a chair,and they blindfold you and then,you're,they start submerging this device in,water um so you're strapped to a chair,you're blindfolded and now you're,underwater and then they flip you upside,down very slowly once we got through,that i think we felt like we kind of,earned our stripes a little bit and that,we were now worthy of of doing this,flying then there's the whole physiology,side of it which was another day of of,training where,we're put into a pressure chamber and,taking up to 25 000 feet then you remove,your oxygen mask to see what hypoxia is,all about okay now the low side of the,chamber only reach up and hold the mask,tight to your face with one hand with,the other release one of your retention,fittings but keep the mask up to your,face,okay then when i say release i want you,to let go of your mask and turn your,oxygen supply off at the console,okay turn it off and begin your,demonstrations six seven turn face each,other,okay this is naval aviation gentlemen,there's something they don't understand,about basic medicaid here,remember i don't want to see how long,you can last i want you to experience,some of the symptoms of hypoxia and then,take the corrective action,okay uh seven has had it there's a,little tetany there,mass to the face oxygen,once the actors physical abilities were,tested and pushed to the limits they,started flying in the actual aircraft,but they couldn't just jump to f-18s,immediately they had to be eased into,them first they started out in,single-engine airplanes to build up,their spatial awareness inside the,aircraft,next they were put in l-39s for,aerobatic training to feel what it was,like in a jet then from there they,graduated to the f-18 super hornets,and while we see tom cruise take off,from the aircraft carrier that's,presumably the uss abraham lincoln it's,rumored that the other actors took off,from a base nearby,the actors also had to learn,cinematography and understand what looks,good on screen,they learned how to operate the cameras,and how to direct themselves in the jets,in fact the teams work closely with sony,digital cameras to ensure they could,effectively capture the gut-churning,in-flight action,we're working with a brand new camera,system that allows us to put six imax,quality cameras inside the cockpit with,the actors some of the aircraft in the,movie include a cgi sukhoi su-57 a,concept fighter known as darkstar the,f-18 super hornet and tom cruise's,personally owned p-51 mustang combine,these jets with all the pilot training,and you're guaranteed some crazy action,scenes one of them is when maverick,sneaks up from below on a couple of,super hornet pilots in training for a,strike,experts and former naval pilots say even,the blue angels who fly super hornets,don't perform such dangerous maneuvers,in their choreographed routine,but were the actors in any real danger,other than sort of vomit being liber,liberally sprayed around the back seat i,think uh that was probably the closest,of calls when you're talking about an 80,some odd million dollar aircraft that is,funded by the u.s taxpayers they're,they're very they tend to be very,careful,uh with those and not run them into,things so uh yeah that was they were all,it looks very dangerous but it was all,done very safely so after all that high,altitude gut wrenching action one thing,is for certain this movie will have you,at the edge of your seat and it's gonna,inspire a new generation of top gun fans,let us know what you think of the
